AI adoption and energy infrastructure shifts in Latin Am

Overview

The expansion of artificial intelligence is driving significant shifts in business operations, labor markets, and energy infrastructure across Latin America.

In Peru, the Peruvian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (Capece) confirms that 80% of companies have adopted AI tools, though only 13% have reached advanced integration due to data fragmentation. In Colombia, the Asocapitales report identifies ten occupational groups most exposed to AI-driven task changes, suggesting technology will likely complement rather than replace jobs.

Infrastructure demands are placing unprecedented strain on energy systems, particularly in Brazil. While the Ministry of Mines and Energy previously reported 38 GW in system access requests for AI data centers, recent developments indicate a growing crisis in energy transmission. Although the government has seen connection requests totaling up to 80 GW, much of this was speculative, leaving approximately 10 GW currently under evaluation.

A critical bottleneck has emerged due to a geographic mismatch: renewable energy surpluses from wind and solar are concentrated in the Northeast, while data center developers prefer metropolitan hubs in the Southeast, such as São Paulo and Campinas. The National Electric System Operator (ONS) has noted that transmission capacity in these regions is currently exhausted. Because constructing new lines can take five to seven years, the grid is described as ‘practically inelastic’ in the short term.

To manage these loads, the Energy Research Company is assessing long-term impacts on generation and transmission. This surge is also accelerating a shift in cooling technologies; Bank of America projects liquid cooling will be used in 70% of new AI installations by 2030. Meanwhile, energytech startups like Revolusolar and Lemon Energia continue to utilize subscription models to address energy inclusion and tariff stability.
