Global menopause awareness initiatives
Overview
In observance of World Menopause Day, international community initiatives and health experts are working to increase awareness regarding menopause and its associated health impacts.
In Croatia, an inaugural event in Rijeka at the Hotel Continental on October 15 and 16 provides a holistic view of perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause through lectures by medical professionals, psychologists, and artists. Experts, including Dr. Susanna Unsworth of the brand INTIMINA, are highlighting the Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM), a condition affecting up to 84% of postmenopausal women.
Community wellness events are being held in Australia and the United Kingdom. In Armidale, Australia, the Country Women’s Association is hosting ‘Menopause to MenoPeak’, while in Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom, the brand Peachie is hosting a wellness retreat focusing on menopause nutrition.
In Brazil, the upcoming International Menopause Day on October 18 highlights the needs of approximately 30 million women in the climacteric stage. Recent discussions in Liechtenstein and Germany have expanded the focus to include workplace support and the psychological toll of menopause, including anxiety, depression, and ‘brain fog’.
In Ruggell, Liechtenstein, an event organized by the Association for the Promotion of Holistic Health (FGG) addressed hormonal changes, nutrition, and exercise. Experts emphasized that women should not simply endure symptoms and noted that while employees aged 40 to 59 are highly valuable, menopause symptoms can impact professional performance. In Germany, Dr. Agnes Jacobs of the Frankfurt Menopause Center described menopause as a transition often overlooked by the medical system, noting symptoms such as joint pain, heart palpitations, and cognitive exhaustion.
At the Menopause West Africa Experience 2026, stakeholders and policymakers called for increased awareness to combat stigma and misconceptions. Clifford Okwesi, Chairman of the Menopause West Africa Organizing Committee, advocated for menopause and perimenopause to be discussed as openly as menstruation.
