Global opera house season announcements
Overview
Major international opera houses have announced their upcoming performance seasons for 2026 and 2027. Opera Australia has unveiled its 2027 season, which will be the first under the leadership of newly appointed director of opera Amy Lane, alongside CEO Alex Budd and music director Andrea Battistoni. The lineup includes a steampunk production of ‘The Magic Flute’ and a large-scale staging of Wagner’s ‘Tannhäuser’ at Melbourne’s State Theatre.
Other global institutions have also released programming details. The Metropolitan Opera in the United States will present ‘Lincoln in the Bardo’, a commissioned work by Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek. In Italy, Teatro alla Scala will begin its season under new Music Director Myung-Whun Chung with a production of Verdi’s ‘Otello’. Additionally, Washington Concert Opera will mark its 40th anniversary with performances of works by Haydn and Massenet.
In Germany, the Semperoper Dresden has announced its 2026/27 repertoire, consisting of twenty-seven titles. Key premieres include Gaspare Spontini’s ‘La Vestale’ at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, directed by Lydia Steier and starring soprano Sonya Yonchevska. Other notable stagings include Daniel Kramer’s production of Wagner’s ‘Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’ at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Milo Rau’s ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Tobias Kratzer’s Rossini production of ‘Guillaume Tell’ at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.
Expanding on the German programming, the Bayerische Staatsoper has announced its 2026/27 season with an emphasis on Wagnerian and contemporary works. This includes the final two parts of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, ‘Siegfried’ and ‘Götterdämmerung’, with Tobias Kratzer directing the trilogy to align with the latter. The season also features John Adams’ ‘Doctor Atomic’, Britten’s ‘Death in Venice’, and the premiere of Diana Syrses’ ‘Liberty’.
