Cleveland Guardians keep AL Central lead as Ramírez returns
Entities: Yandy Díaz · Cleveland Guardians · Cedric Mullins · Drew Rasmussen · Tampa Bay Rays
Overview
The Guardians have stayed near the top of the American League Central, relying on strong pitching and timely offense. After weeks of rehab from left‑hand hamate surgery, third‑baseman José Ramírez continued to make progress. On July 18, manager Stephen Vogt noted that Ramírez had moved from tee work to live batting practice against right‑hander Ben Lively and that the club might forgo a traditional Triple‑A stint if the player felt ready, hoping his bat would boost Cleveland’s second‑half push.
Four days later, on July 22, the Guardians activated Ramírez from the injured list. He returned to the starting lineup against the Minnesota Twins, batting second and playing third. Outfielder Kahlil Watson was optioned to Triple‑A Columbus to make room. Vogt said the team could have been “a lot different” without him, after a 15‑15 stretch while he was sidelined, and his presence is expected to revive a struggling offense as Cleveland remains in a virtual tie for the AL Central lead with Chicago.
The next game, on July 24, saw the Guardians fall 11‑3 to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Despite Austin Hedges’ ninth‑inning two‑run homer, the early deficit proved insurmountable. Ray’s Ryan Vilade and Richie Palacios each homered, and Nick Fortes extended his hitting streak to five games. Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee took the loss, leaving the club still within striking distance of the division lead.
