IKEA and Xbox gaming furniture collaboration
Overview
IKEA and Microsoft’s Xbox division announced a collaboration to create a line of gaming-inspired furniture and home accessories. Initial teasers showcased items mimicking Xbox hardware, such as a green cushion shaped like a controller’s D-pad and a stool resembling an analog stick. Following two years of research into player habits, the partnership unveiled the ‘YXSTABY’ collection. Moving away from traditional high-contrast RGB aesthetics, the line utilizes a minimalist Nordic design.
The collection includes nine products, such as a multifunctional TV stand and an adjustable gaming desk with honeycomb ventilation slots designed for Xbox Series X thermal management. Technical features of the collection include integrated high-power wireless charging for controllers and magnetic accessory mounts. The series emphasizes sustainability, with more than 80% of products constructed from recycled plastics and FSC-certified wood.
IKEA product design developer Philip Dilé stated that the collection responds to changing domestic habits where gaming is often a social or relaxing activity integrated into daily life. The design aims to provide functional solutions for hardware storage and cooling while maintaining a “credible home decor appearance.”
The ‘YXSTABY’ collection has now officially launched. The nine-piece line is designed to blend seamlessly into various living spaces, including kitchens and living rooms, by serving as functional home decor when gaming is not in progress. The collaboration aims to address the needs of an estimated 3 billion gamers worldwide by providing versatile furniture that avoids the heavy RGB lighting and specialized setups typically associated with traditional ‘gamer’ aesthetics. The development process involved a joint effort where one designer from each company worked on every item, combining Xbox’s 25 years of gaming expertise with IKEA’s 80 years of home furnishing experience. Unveiled at Gamescom in Germany, the collection celebrates the 25th anniversary of Xbox.
