India-Bangladesh cricket series uncertainty
Overview
The proposed white-ball cricket series between India and Bangladesh, slated for September 2026, remains in a state of uncertainty due to diplomatic tensions and scheduling conflicts. Following a virtual press conference by ousted former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from New Delhi on August 5, 2026, the Bangladesh government criticized India’s involvement, suggesting it undermines local democratic stability. A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official expressed significant doubt regarding the tour’s viability, stating, “I don't think so (that the series will proceed as planned). We tried our best on behalf of the cricket board but this is beyond all of us at this point.” The BCCI is preparing to seek clearance from the Indian government, as it cannot make an independent decision due to political and security sensitivities. If clearance is not granted, the BCCI is reportedly considering alternative plans, such as hosting a series against Afghanistan in Delhi during the same period. As negotiations continue, the BCB has indicated that the series dates may need to be shifted to accommodate the domestic Game Development Trophy, currently scheduled for August 28 to September 9. BCB President Tamim Iqbal noted the board is prepared to move the domestic tournament to the Bashundhara ground if the international series dates are finalized. Additionally, Iqbal confirmed that the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not be held this year following reported financial losses. Recent developments suggest the series may be rescheduled for January 2027. The BCB has requested a window at the beginning of the year, and discussions are ongoing between the BCCI and the Indian government. While an official announcement from the BCCI is pending, relations between the boards appear to be improving following Tamim Iqbal’s recent visit to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
