Overview

In late July 2026, Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung dismissed reports of Chinese outposts in the Taksing sector as “lies and social-media rumours,” asserting that Indian soldiers patrol the border continuously. Chief Minister Pema Khandu echoed this stance in early August, stating no Chinese incursion had occurred and pledging to consult tribal communities and the Indian Army. By mid-August, the situation escalated into a political dispute following allegations of Chinese interference with Indian Army patrols in the Taksing sector. Opposition leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, accused the central government of silence regarding reports that China is preventing Indian forces from patrolling locations near the LAC. Gandhi described these reports as “extremely alarming” and alleged the government was attempting to suppress news of the situation. Adding to the tension, a fact-finding team of regional politicians from the People’s Party of Arunachal Pradesh (PPA) reported that China has encroached on land and denied the Indian army access to key patrolling points in the Upper Subansiri district. The Indian government has dismissed claims of fresh incursions or loss of patrolling access as “unsubstantiated and uncorroborated.”

Following high-level diplomatic efforts, including the 25th Round of Special Representatives Talks in Beijing on August 25, the situation moved toward military dialogue. On September 6 and 7, 2026, India and China conducted their first-ever senior military commander-level flag meetings in the eastern sector. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, these meetings took place at Vacha on the Indian side and at Damai on the Chinese side. The Indian delegation was led by Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, the 3 Corps Commander. These discussions follow understandings reached between special representatives in 2025 and 2026, aiming to maintain peace and tranquility along the border.
