India TET leak prompts arrests and political outcry
Overview
The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) was postponed after a leaked paper surfaced in late June 2026, leaving nearly six lakh candidates without an exam date. Following Rahul Gandhi’s July appeals for a new schedule and accountability, police intensified their operation. On 25 July, Maharashtra authorities arrested alleged mastermind Bijendra Kumar Gupta – also reported as Bijendra Kumar Baleshwar Shah – in Bihar, transferred him via Pune Airport to Bhiwandi for interrogation, and added him to a tally of fourteen detainees linked to the printing‑and‑distribution network that sold copies for roughly ₹8,000 each, netting about ₹1.5 crore. Gupta’s wife, Suman Gupta, and several operatives were also taken into custody. The state government reiterated plans to reschedule the exam for the affected candidates and pledged tighter security for future tests. Student groups have escalated demands, calling for the resignation of the state education minister. At the national level, the Union Cabinet approved a draft amendment to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, proposing penalties of up to ten years’ imprisonment and fines up to ₹10 crore for organized paper‑leak crimes, while investigators probe links to similar exam‑paper frauds in other states.
