India‑UK Trade Deal Momentum

Entities: India · Assocham · UK‑India Business Council · Stephen Flynn · Scotland

Overview

The India‑UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and Social Security Agreement entered into force on 15 July 2026, removing duties on about 99 % of Indian exports to the UK and granting British firms access to 137 Indian service sub‑sectors. Initial duty‑free shipments totaled $140 million and FY 2025‑26 bilateral trade was $35.44 billion with a $7.9 billion services surplus.

Industry bodies now expect the pact to more than double trade by 2030. Assocham projects total India‑UK commerce to rise from roughly $58 billion in FY 2025‑26 to $115 billion by 2030, creating 700,000‑1,000,000 jobs in India if firms meet UK quality and certification standards. Earlier forecasts of $115 billion by 2030 and 700‑1 million jobs are therefore reinforced.

Karnataka officials view the agreement as a catalyst for regional growth, citing strengths in agriculture, IT, aerospace, manufacturing, education and health‑tech. A HealthTech accelerator run by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education brought together 25 startups, with six slated for a fully funded immersion visit to the UK. Bengaluru dispatched the first export consignment under the pact, consisting of aluminium products and electronic goods.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade announced tariff‑rate quotas for UK‑built passenger cars and goods vehicles, cutting duties from about 110 % to 30‑50 % for selected engine categories, with a review planned for 2028. A study by Esocham Global forecasts $115 billion bilateral trade by 2030 and up to one million jobs, contingent on Indian firms leveraging simplified customs, digital‑trade tools and sustainability standards.
