Infrastructure theft and vandalism in Nigeria

Overview

Law enforcement agencies in Nigeria have conducted several operations targeting the theft and vandalism of public and school infrastructure.

In the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Police Command arrested ten suspects across Kubwa, Wuye, and the National Mosque area. These individuals were apprehended for vandalizing armoured cables and cutting down solar-powered street lights to remove components. Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh noted that investigations are ongoing to identify syndicate members and those purchasing the stolen goods.

In Osun and Zamfara states, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested multiple suspects for similar crimes. In Osun, three individuals were arrested for allegedly stealing and selling electrical cables to a metal scrap dealer. In Zamfara, nine suspects were apprehended following the theft of roofing zinc from Tsageru Primary School. The group reportedly attempted to bribe local traditional rulers to avoid consequences, but the attempts were rejected.
