Isola di Capo Rizzuto environmental and legal issues

Overview

In Isola di Capo Rizzuto, local authorities are addressing ongoing environmental, economic, and legal challenges. Following a July 21 swimming ban due to seawater contamination, municipal councilor Luigina Vallone requested a reduction or exemption of the waste tax (TARI) for tourist-accommodation businesses in the Capo Piccolo area, describing it as “a extraordinary economic support to save the tourism enterprises hit by the swimming ban.”

Law enforcement efforts have expanded significantly. In the local marine reserve, Carabinieri and Coast Guard officials charged six individuals for operating jet skis at high speeds near swimmers and within protected areas. The Prosecutor’s Office of Crotone ordered the seizure of three jet skis and one inflatable boat following reports of systematic violations and aggressive behavior toward military personnel. Recent maritime operations also saw the Guardia di Finanza rescue seven people from a capsized vessel near Isola Capo Rizzuto. Simultaneously, an anti-mafia access commission has been established at the municipality. Three commissioners appointed by the Prefecture are reviewing administrative documents from 2025 onwards to detect criminal infiltration, including the ‘Black Flower’ dossier regarding an extortion system targeting a tourist village.

Political tensions have escalated as both Lega Salvini Premier and the Partito Democratico (PD) have broken ties with Mayor Maria Grazia Vittimberga’s administration. Lega Salvini Premier cited a lack of dialogue regarding strategic planning and water management, while the PD withdrew from the City Council to avoid complicity in the administration’s silence regarding environmental concerns and the upcoming access commission. Investigations into local infrastructure have led to five individuals being charged with aggravated theft following the discovery of illegal connections to the water network.
