Italian police anti-crime operations
Overview
By mid-August 2026, Italian law enforcement continued widespread operations targeting drug trafficking, organized fraud, and public safety violations. In Rome, Carabinieri and State Police conducted raids in the Esquilino, Pigneto, and Tor Bella Monaca areas, dismantling drug distribution networks and making arrests for theft and robbery, including a violent gold chain snatching from a tourist. Authorities also addressed diverse criminal activities, such as a “fake Carabiniere” scam in Torrimpietra and organized phone fraud targeting the elderly in Naples. Other reported incidents included sexual assault on a bus traveling between Napoli and Pescara, robberies at Roma Termini and in Bologna, and sexual harassment involving a minor in Catania. In Ceglie Messapica, an individual was arrested for setting fire to olive groves, while the Rome Tribunal ordered the seizure of structures at Parco Caracalla for archaeological and landscape violations.
Drug and weapons enforcement remained a priority. In Sicily, the Guardia di Finanza seized 11 kg of cocaine in Ispica, an operation estimated to have disrupted a trade worth approximately 2 million euros. In Palagonia, Carabinieri seized 17 kg of drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, which were found in buried safes. Other narcotics-related arrests included a 15-year-old in Vigevano for possession of hashish and cocaine, a 33-year-old in Fino Mornasco for drug possession in a forest, and a 47-year-old in Casapesenna caught operating a marijuana greenhouse. In Casal di Principe, a 20-year-old was arrested for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition hidden in a roof cavity. Additionally, an entrepreneur in Palermo faced a 1.6 million euro seizure related to fraudulent building bonuses, and authorities in Cosenza arrested individuals for extortion and threats regarding property rentals. Recent operations also included the seizure of over 350 grams of cocaine in Taranto and an arrest in Policoro for sexual assault on a beach.
