JAMB university admission processes in Nigeria

Overview

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) initially provided clarifications regarding various candidate statuses on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). The Board explained that ‘Not Admitted’ does not preclude future offers, while ‘Admission in Progress’ indicates a proposed admission awaiting institutional or JAMB approval. A candidate is only officially ‘Admitted’ once JAMB approves the offer. Following a 96-hour disruption to the CAPS platform caused by administrative issues with its hosting organization, JAMB restored the system and urged tertiary institutions to accelerate their admission processes. The Board reminded institutions of established deadlines: public universities must conclude admissions by October 31, 2026, private universities by November 30, and other tertiary institutions by December 31, 2026. Candidates were also advised to upload or verify NECO credentials to facilitate the intensified admission period. In a subsequent development, JAMB announced a final extension for candidates to respond to outstanding admission offers from the 2021–2025 cycles. This extension, which moves the previous September 30, 2026, deadline to November 30, 2026, follows the aforementioned CAPS disruption. JAMB Acting Director of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, stated the extension aims to ensure candidates can regularize their status without disadvantage. Affected candidates must log into their CAPS profiles to accept or reject these offers by the new deadline. JAMB warned that any offers unaddressed by November 30, 2026, will automatically revert to a ‘Not Admitted’ status. Properly documented admissions are noted as critical for candidates to access benefits such as participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. Any subsequent requests to update records after such a reversion will require a penalty fee.
