Latin American regional economic development initiatives
Overview
Regional initiatives across Latin America continue to prioritize economic development, social inclusion, and the support of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
Recent efforts have expanded to include direct resource provision and youth engagement. In Colombia, the ‘Santander Contigo’ strategy provided essential equipment—such as refrigerators, sewing machines, and stoves—to entrepreneurs in the agricultural, textile, and food sectors to improve production and income. In Mexico, the Business Kids Entrepreneurship Fair in Huajuapan de León introduced children to leadership, finance, and marketing to foster early interest in business.
Support for women and formalization remains a central pillar. El Salvador’s CONAMYPE reported that over 200 women are completing the ‘Mujer y Negocios’ program, while Mexico’s SETUE is conducting financial and commercial workshops in Baja California Sur. In Argentina, the ‘Bazar del Fuego’ is facilitating commerce in Tierra del Fuego, and Tunuyán is offering guidance on business formalization.
Other regional activities include promoting social and solidarity economies through cooperatives in Celaya, Mexico, and expanding agroecological operations in Cuba. In the Dominican Republic, leadership at Promipyme has advocated for communication models that better translate MSME needs into measurable public policy. Meanwhile, experts in Peru continue to emphasize the role of artificial intelligence and data analysis in enhancing MSME competitiveness.
