Liberal Party internal divisions and Vilela's polling lead

Internal friction has emerged within the Liberal Party (PL) in Goiás during the current election cycle. Initial reports indicated a lack of cohesion between key figures Senator Wilder Morais and Federal Deputy Gustavo Gayer, whose independent campaign strategies diverged from the party’s official declarations of unity in early August.

This instability escalated as the party executive began evaluating the expulsion of Anápolis Mayor Márcio Corrêa. The move follows Corrêa’s decision to support Daniel Vilela (MDB) for governor, a direct opponent of the PL’s gubernatorial candidate, Wilder Morais. On August 27, the PL’s state executive committee unanimously approved an ethical-disciplinary representation against Corrêa, forwarding the case to the party’s Ethics Council. Senator Wilder Morais, who also serves as the state party president, criticized Corrêa’s actions as a “betrayal of the party and former President Jair Bolsonaro.”

Recent polling data from Real Time Big Data, Quaest, and Brasmarket reinforces the political challenges facing the PL. Incumbent Governor Daniel Vilela (MDB) holds a significant lead, reaching 45% of voting intentions in Real Time Big Data surveys. Vilela maintains a lead of up to 23 percentage points over his closest competitors, including Marconi Perillo (PSDB) at 22% and Wilder Morais (PL) at 17%. In simulated second-round scenarios, Vilela maintains a strong advantage, leading Perillo with 57% to 28% and Morais with 56% to 30%.

As the campaign enters its third week following the August 16 official start, Vilela has visited 36 municipalities, focusing on infrastructure, education, and direct contact through parades and meetings. Meanwhile, tensions persist within the government coalition regarding allegations of misogyny involving Senate candidates Gracinha Caiado (UB) and Gustavo Mendanha (PRD).
