Liberia diplomatic and multilateral engagement

Liberia is actively pursuing diplomatic engagement and strengthening its international standing through bilateral cooperation and multilateral leadership roles.

In August 2026, Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti visited India to enhance ties in technology, agriculture, and trade, which included the inauguration of a new embassy in New Delhi. Concurrently, a delegation of 12 Liberian legislators participated in a South-South Peer Learning Mission to India from August 10 to 15, 2026. Supported by UN Women and the IBSA Fund, the mission focused on studying Indian models for digital inclusion, financial empowerment, and gender-responsive budgeting to advance women’s leadership in Liberia.

Regarding its role in the United Nations, Liberia concluded its tenure as the Coordinator of the Ten Elected Members (E10) of the Security Council in August 2026. During this period, the nation hosted UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss humanitarian interventions in Gaza and the West Bank, chaired meetings on the Libyan political process and Sahelian security, and negotiated with the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.

Looking toward its December presidency of the Security Council, Ambassador-at-Large B. Elias Shoniyin has urged the nation to treat the role as a ‘whole-of-government national project.’ Shoniyin emphasized that Liberia’s transition from a recipient of UN peacekeeping to a Security Council member provides unique moral authority to champion conflict prevention and African interests. He cautioned that ‘activity is not impact,’ arguing that success should be measured by lasting institutional legacies and strengthened development partnerships rather than the volume of meetings attended.
