In this narrative, Jace Beleren—now known as ‘The Theorist’—seeks to replace the existing Multiverse with the Echoverse, a controlled alternative reality. This Echoverse is designed as a conceptual prison to eliminate suffering by overwriting history so that threats like the Phyrexians, Nicol Bolas, and the Eldrazi never existed. However, this new reality threatens to overwrite and consume the original Multiverse, positioning Jace as an antagonist to former allies, including Ajani and Chandra.

Gameplay features include the ‘Empower Jace’ mechanic, which allows players to increase the loyalty of a Jace planeswalker token, and the use of the Amass mechanic to create Jace planeswalker tokens. The set also utilizes ‘mirrored pairs’ in booster packs, offering contrasting or ‘echo’ versions of characters and spells, such as a pacifist version of Ghalta the Unstoppable. Additionally, the set introduces Hexhaven, described as a militarized version of the Strixhaven academy led by elder sphinxes.
