Malawi women's national football team WAFCON campaign
Overview
The Malawi women’s national football team, known as the Scorchers, progressed through the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Following a 3-1 victory over Egypt in a Group C match, fans celebrated the win through sponsored watch parties in Blantyre. Supported by the National Bank of Malawi (NBM), the team's momentum continued into the knockout stages. After NBM facilitated a delegation of officials, government members, and promotion winners to travel to Morocco, the Scorchers defeated Ghana 2-1 in the quarter-finals to advance to the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, Malawi defeated Algeria 3-1 to secure a historic debut in the WAFCON final. This match sets the stage for Malawi to potentially become the second nation from the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) to win the title, following South Africa in 2022. The final features Cameroon, who is appearing in their fourth WAFCON final.
Ahead of the championship match, President Peter Mutharika issued a tribute to the Scorchers, noting that the team has achieved a level of “national unity that politics has failed to reach.” Alongside the First Lady, the President emphasized that the team's spirit and selflessness should serve as a model for the country.
