Malaysia football team progress and upcoming China friendlys

Overview

As the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 progresses, Malaysia has begun its campaign in Division 1, Group A. Following a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh, the team prepared for a high-stakes match against hosts Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

Interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe emphasized a “positive state with high motivation,” focusing on tactical adjustments to balance defensive stability with attacking speed. While Indonesia utilized significant home support—including a record-breaking human mural of 2,625 fans forming the word ‘BELIEVE’—the competition continued with high intensity.

Following their performance in the tournament, which included a victory over Vietnam in the third-place match, the Malaysia national football team has shifted its focus toward upcoming international fixtures. Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan, President of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), stated that the team aims to utilize the November and March international windows to improve their FIFA ranking. This strategic move is intended to secure a better position ahead of the 2027 World Cup and 2031 Asian Cup qualifying draws.

To this end, Malaysia is scheduled to play two friendly matches against China in Guangzhou on November 11 and 17. The Malaysian side seeks to capitalize on China's recent form, noting that the Chinese national team has suffered three consecutive losses against New Zealand, Palestine, and Tajikistan without scoring a goal.
