Medical recovery and return to football of Yael Trepy

Overview

Yael Trepy, a 20-year-old French forward for Cagliari Calcio, is recovering after a near-drowning incident in a swimming pool in the Costa Smeralda area of Sardinia. Following the accident, Trepy was airlifted to Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Sassari. He was initially placed in a medically induced coma and required mechanical ventilation due to severe respiratory failure and aspiration syndrome. Recent medical reports confirm significant progress. Trepy has emerged from his coma, has been successfully extubated, and is now breathing independently. He has also begun eating and drinking. Medical officials report that he shows no apparent neurological deficits and remains in stable condition, though he continues to be monitored in the intensive care unit due to previous respiratory complications. Trepy has since been transferred from the intensive care unit to the pulmonology department for continued monitoring of his respiratory status. Dr. Stefania Milia, director of the intensive care unit, confirmed that Trepy’s clinical condition has stabilized, removing the need for intensive assistance. He has begun mobilization with a physiotherapist to assist in his rehabilitation. As a gesture of gratitude, Trepy presented the medical team with personalized Cagliari jerseys. Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini and medical director Stefania Milia credited the rapid response of emergency services, which arrived within five minutes of the incident, for preventing a potentially fatal outcome. While his condition is improving steadily, Trepy is expected to miss upcoming league matches. Following his period of stabilization, Trepy has been discharged from the Sassari University Hospital in good clinical condition. He is expected to move to a specialized facility in Arco, in the province of Trento, to begin a rehabilitation phase focused on fully restoring respiratory functionality before any potential return to professional sports activity. Expressing optimism on social media, Trepy stated, “It's time for a comeback.”
