Middle East maritime security and energy corridor threats

The United States and its allies are facing increased instability regarding maritime chokepoints in the Middle East. Iran has demonstrated the capacity to significantly reduce oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz, while Iraqi Shiite militias allied with Iran have targeted the Saudi East-West oil pipeline, forcing a temporary shutdown.

In Yemen, the Houthi movement has expanded its territorial control by capturing 17 districts, securing much of the southwest coast toward the Bab al-Mandeb strait. This expansion follows the capture of sophisticated military equipment previously provided to Saudi-backed forces.

In response to these maritime security risks and the threat to energy corridors, China has privately urged Iran to use its influence to curb Houthi military advances. While Beijing has publicly called for dialogue, its private communications with Tehran specifically aim to prevent further escalation to protect shipping lines. Iranian sources have responded by attributing regional hostilities to the actions of the United States and Israel.
