Monaco GP podium dispute and Monza GP results
Overview
The dispute regarding the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix final results concluded with the FIA International Court of Appeal overturning the reinstatement of Pierre Gasly to the podium. The controversy began when Alpine argued that a technical error in pit-lane distance measurements—inaccurate by 77 centimeters—had led to incorrect pit-lane speed measurements. This initially resulted in the rescinding of two five-second penalties for Gasly, which reinstated him to third place and demoted Isack Hadjar, Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad. Red Bull Racing and McLaren appealed, arguing the reversal created a sporting injustice as other drivers had already served their penalties. Following a hearing in Paris, the FIA ruled that the original penalties against Gasly must stand, demoting him to seventh place and reassigning the podium position to Isack Hadjar. Alpine expressed ‘deception and frustration’ regarding the verdict.
During the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore accused judge Filippo Marchino of acting more like a ‘prosecutor’ than a neutral judge, alleging ties to McLaren. McLaren’s Andrea Stella dismissed these claims as ‘quite insulting.’ Following the legal fallout, Stella called for reforms to the FIA’s Right of Review procedure, describing the retroactive loss of Gasly’s podium as problematic for the sport. He noted that delays affect drivers, teams, and championship standings long after a race concludes, and highlighted the need for better time constraints for stewards and clearer conditions for granting reviews.
Amidst this legal tension, Pierre Gasly secured a sensational maiden Formula 1 pole position at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, recording a time of 1:21.786 to narrowly beat Mercedes’ George Russell by 0.060 seconds. However, during the race, Gasly and Alpine were unable to maintain the pace of top-tier teams, with Gasly ultimately finishing in seventh place.
