Moroccan fisheries 2026 port trends
Overview
Through August 2026, Morocco’s coastal and traditional fishing sector showed continued growth, with total landings reaching 723,490 tons (a 6% increase) and a market value exceeding 7.43 billion dirhams (a 1% increase) compared to the previous year.
Regional performance remains highly divergent. Atlantic ports have seen significant fluctuations. While Laayoune Port reported a 56% increase in landings (141,780 tons) and a 21% rise in value, driven by an 86% surge in pelagic fish, Dakhla Port experienced a sharp 70% drop in landings to 16,912 tons and a 46% decline in value. Specific downturns were also noted at Safi Port, where landings fell 34% and value dropped 40%, and M’diq Port, which saw a 27% decrease in landings.
In contrast, Essaouira Port reported a 27% increase in landing volume through August, reaching 12,816 tons. However, the commercial value at Essaouira fell by 25% to 144.2 million dirhams. This trend was marked by a 70% increase in white fish landings and a 39% rise in pelagic fish, but offset by a 64% drop in cephalopod volume and a 68% drop in cephalopod value.
Mediterranean ports previously showed an 8% increase in volume but a 10% decline in value, with Nador Port landings falling 11%. Species-wise, while pelagic fish and white fish have shown volume gains in certain regions, cephalopods and crustaceans have faced significant declines in both volume and value.
