MTN digital skills and AI training initiatives in Africa

Overview

MTN South Africa has implemented various digital skills training initiatives to address the growing digital-skills gap in Africa. In the Western Cape, the MTN South Africa Foundation and MTN Skills Academy graduated 80 unemployed youths from the Digital Skills for Digital Jobs (DS4DJ) programme, providing accredited qualifications in cybersecurity, data analytics, and systems development.

To improve digital and economic inclusion, MTN launched an AI-enabled Job Board feature through its MTN Skills Academy. In Nigeria, Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited partnered with Junior Achievement Nigeria to host a 10-day digital bootcamp for over 600 young people covering fields such as UI/UX design, project management, and data analysis.

In Ghana, MTN hosted educational sessions on navigating the digital economy through artificial intelligence (AI). These sessions provided intensive training for journalists and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) regarding the risks and opportunities of AI, including data security and the necessity of human oversight to counter ‘hallucinations’—the generation of false or fabricated information. Experts advised a ‘zero-trust rule’ for free AI tools to prevent the exposure of confidential information. Additionally, the third MTN Masterclass Series in Accra hosted over 120 entrepreneurs to discuss how emerging technologies and strategic partnerships can drive business growth.

Expanding its reach in Nigeria, the MTN Foundation and SAIL Empowerment Foundation completed a training phase of the MTN-SAIL Teachers’ Fellowship. In partnership with Microsoft, the program provided formal training in responsible AI-assisted teaching to public school educators, aiming to integrate digital literacy and inquiry-based learning into classrooms across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
