Nequi transition to independent financing company
Overview
In late July 2026, Nequi announced it would split from Bancolombia to become an independent financing company, Nequi Compañía de Financiamiento, owned by Grupo Cibest effective 1 September 2026. The transition was described as a legal and administrative change; digital wallet services, including money transfers, recharges, and cash withdrawals, were expected to remain unchanged. Deposits were to remain protected by the Fogafín insurance scheme, with the new entity supervised by Colombia’s financial regulator.
As the transition approached, Nequi announced a series of partial service suspensions scheduled between the afternoon of 31 August and the early morning of 1 September 2026 to facilitate a technological update. These interruptions included ACH transfers, PSE payments, Bre-B operations, transfers to Bancolombia, international remittances, and PayPal-related transactions. However, the company clarified that the app itself would not be fully suspended, allowing users to continue Nequi-to-Nequi transfers and use Nequi Visa cards.
In tandem with the independence move, Nequi announced a partnership with Redeban to allow users with pre-approved credit to make payments via physical dataphones.
On 31 August 2026, Nequi officially transitioned to an independent neobank operating as Nequi S.A. Compañía de Financiamiento. For its approximately 29 million users, the daily experience remains unchanged, including the ability to use Bancolombia ATMs and correspondents without additional costs. This restructuring allows Nequi to potentially expand into foreign exchange, remittances, and investment products like Certificates of Deposit (CDT). User deposits are now backed by Fogafín insurance, providing coverage of up to $50 million pesos per depositor.
