Nippon TV drama ‘Hide & Seek’ production and airing

Overview

Nippon Television’s Sunday mystery-romance drama ‘Hide & Seek: 0-Byo no Kanojo’, based on Masahiro Imamura’s novel, premiered on October 4. The series stars Sota Fukushi as Yuichi Tsukura, a freelance journalist who becomes a fugitive after being framed for a bombing. While hiding in Busan, South Korea, Tsukura receives a mysterious phone call from his lover, Sana (Ayara Shida), whom he believed had died in the explosion.

Supporting cast includes Juri Tanaka of SixTONES as Makoto Hyodo, the leader of the political organization ‘Live Commons’, and Tetta Sugimoto, who appears in the first episode as Tsukura’s uncle. The series theme song, ‘Hikari’ (Light), is a love ballad performed by the band Marcy and written by vocalist Ukyo Yoshida.

Production involved filming in high temperatures, with Fukushi utilizing a three-day beard to portray his fugitive status. As the series progressed, plot developments included the abduction of Sana (referred to in some contexts as Kyoka) by a figure known as ‘Clover’. In the fourth episode, Tsukura and Hyodo form an unlikely alliance to rescue her, though Tsukura subsequently falls into a trap that leads to him being falsely branded as a bomber on social media, triggering pursuit by the police and the public.
