North Macedonian government domestic policy and stability

Overview

North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has focused on domestic infrastructure, energy security, and political stability. In early October, Mickoski announced approximately 500 million euros in budget support for local municipalities over 27 months, a move he described as “unprecedented” in the country’s 35 years of independence. On energy infrastructure, Mickoski announced plans to build two gas pipeline interconnectors with neighboring countries to increase the nation’s geostrategic importance. One interconnector with a southern neighbor is expected to be operational by the end of the first half of next year, while a second connection with a northern neighbor is slated for completion by the end of 2028. These projects aim to attract investors and facilitate the potential conversion of coal-fired power plants to gas.

Mickoski recently reported that the government is managing over 1,200 active construction and development projects, including highway sections such as Blace–Skopje, Tetovo–Gostivar, and Prilep–Bitola, alongside the Kumanovo–Beljakovce railway line. Educational investments have also been noted, with 90 million euros allocated for infrastructure and student dormitories.

Despite these developments, the administration faces challenges in the judicial sector. While the government previously announced funds for 200 new judicial employees, the Judicial Council confirmed that no new hires have been made due to a lack of individual approvals from the Ministry of Finance, leaving staffing levels significantly below required capacity. Politically, Mickoski has maintained that his governing coalition is stable, though the climate grew contentious in mid-October following allegations of nepotism raised by Levica party leader Dimitar Apasiev.
