Opening and expansion of Karls Erlebnis-Dorf in Oberhausen
Overview
The Karls Erlebnis-Dorf leisure park opened at Centro Oberhausen on 22 July 2026. To mark the opening, the park featured a display of more than 18,000 empty coffee mugs in its 6,000-square-metre main hall. Managing director Robert Dahl stated the display was intended to defend the world record for the greatest number of coffee mugs displayed, surpassing a previous record of 14,000 mugs held in Rostock in 2009. Owned by the Dahl family, the business originated from a small agricultural operation founded by Karl Dahl in 1921. The concept combines strawberry farming and manufacturing with leisure activities, gastronomy, and retail, expanding from its roots in Mecklenburg to multiple locations across Germany. The Oberhausen site marks the chain’s eighth location, its first in North Rhine-Westphalia, and its first situated within a major city.
While the park has become a major attraction, it has faced operational challenges. The international expansion in Oxnard, California, has encountered setbacks after existing buildings were found to be heavily infested with termites, requiring complete demolition and a restart of construction. In Oberhausen, visitors have noted a need for more diaper-changing facilities and improved queue management. Additionally, some parents have criticized a rustic character known as the ‘Klomann’ that greets guests at toilet entrances, claiming it is too frightening for small children. Robert Dahl responded to these complaints by stating the character has been a staple in their parks for years and suggested that ‘a little bit of spookiness is part of it’. The park operates on a cashless system and continues to pursue expansion into Mallorca, Spain.
