Pakistan monsoon deaths rise, floods spread

Overview

Since early May 2026 Pakistan has suffered a string of fatal roof failures as monsoon rains intensified. The wave began with a private school in Dera Ghazi Khan and a house in Shangla, together killing ten children. The worst single loss occurred on 30 June when a private tutoring centre in Lahore’s Kahna neighbourhood collapsed, killing 14 children and injuring several others. Authorities detained the centre’s owner, a contractor and three others on negligence charges, and pledged medical aid for the injured along with stricter inspections of unregistered tutoring centres. On 14 July heavy rain caused a mud‑brick house in the village of Malgin, near Kohat, to give way, raising the death toll to 11 and injuring 12 residents, most of them women and children. Rescue teams used heavy equipment to free survivors, underscoring the fragility of poorly built homes in flood‑prone zones. A further incident on 25 July struck Lahore’s Garhi Shahu Railway Colony, where a mud‑and‑iron roof collapsed during a downpour, killing three family members – a husband, wife and their 11‑year‑old daughter – and injuring a teenage child. Rescue 1122 crews retrieved the victims quickly. National disaster authorities later reported that the monsoon’s cumulative impact between 19 July and 26 July had raised the overall death toll to at least 108 across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with 344 people injured. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 32 deaths and 35 injuries were linked to roof collapses, flash floods and drownings, while Punjab faced widespread flooding of nearly 400 sq km, rising river levels and dozens of homes damaged or swept away. Relief teams continued operations in more than 25 districts, delivering supplies and evacuating residents as the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned that intermittent showers would persist.
