Pernambuco health infrastructure expansion
Overview
In July 2026, the Pernambuco state government began expanding its public-health capacity. On 21 July, it inaugurated a R$ 6.1 million hemodynamics unit at Hospital Getúlio Vargas in Recife. A week later, Governor Raquel Lyra announced a R$ 198.1 million program to upgrade services across the Agreste Meridional, including a new maternity hospital in Garanhuns and Hospital Mestre Dominguinhos.
By mid-August, infrastructure upgrades were completed at two major Recife hospitals. At Hospital Barão de Lucena, R$ 235,000 was invested to requalify the 20-bed Adult ICU, improving electrical, lighting, and climate control systems. At Hospital Agamenon Magalhães, over R$ 1.3 million was used for kitchen renovations and the modernization of an 18-bed General ICU.
Further investments include over R$ 180 million for the modernization of Hospital da Restauração, targeting its ICU and pediatric emergency services. At Hospital Geral de Areias, R$ 17.5 million was allocated for structural works, including a new Dental Specialties Center and X-ray equipment; these upgrades are expected to increase monthly dental capacity to 2,000 patients and X-ray exams to 2,500.
Additionally, the state is investing R$ 48.8 million to expand the Pronto-Socorro Cardiológico Universitário de Pernambuco (PROCAPE). Currently 42.1% complete, the expansion aims to add 115 beds, including 30 ICU beds, by 2027. In a social initiative, the state also launched its first hospital-based high school classroom at Hospital Universitário Oswaldo Cruz to support students undergoing oncological treatment.
