Overview

Frontier Developments has officially released Planet Zoo 2 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The sequel expands the franchise's scope by introducing expansive wildlife reserves and free-roaming preserves, shifting focus toward large-scale ecosystem management and rewilding efforts.

In the released title, players assume the role of a Conservation Coordinator for the Fauna and Ecosystems Network (FEN). Gameplay includes managing complex biomes, such as the Sumatra rainforest, using specialized tools like research vehicles, camera traps, and acoustic recording devices. The game features over 130 animals with high-fidelity animations and authentic behaviors. New features include a first-person perspective for ground-level exploration alongside traditional top-down strategy, as well as customizable aquariums and aviaries.

Three primary game modes are available: Career, Franchise, and Sandbox. While the title received praise for its improved building tools and graphics, the launch was met with technical difficulties, including bugs regarding staff pathfinding, guest behavior, and general stability.

In response to these issues, Frontier Developments released update 1.0.4 to improve stability and gameplay across all platforms. This patch addresses causes for game crashes related to object movement, hub navigation, and undo/redo functions. It also implements significant refinements to animal behavior, such as fixing bugs that allowed animals to escape enclosures, improving climbing animations, and adjusting reproduction and herd welfare calculations. Additionally, the update enhances Franchise mode by increasing initial animal trading volumes and provides more accurate species compatibility information within the Zoopedia.
