Polish agriculture faces weather extremes and rising costs

Overview

Poland’s agricultural sector faces intensifying volatility from geopolitical tensions, rising input costs, and extreme weather. While previous trends showed mixed market results, recent data indicates significant downward pressure on yields and upward pressure on prices.

Climate-driven losses have become severe. Following frost-related aid in 2025, the 2026 season has been defined by intense droughts and heatwaves. EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Hansen estimated total sector losses between 14 and 17 billion euros. In Poland, Statistics Poland reports substantial harvest declines, including fruit production down 18.6 percent, apples by 19.5 percent, and raspberries by 23 percent. To mitigate recurring climate extremes, Poland and several neighboring countries have called for an increase in the European agricultural reserve.

Economic pressures are mounting. Phosphorus fertilizer prices are rising, with Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) averaging 4,250 PLN per tonne. Ammonium phosphates have increased by an average of 90 PLN per tonne since mid-September, a 22 percent rise compared to pre-conflict levels in Iran. Superphosphate prices have also climbed due to rising sulfur costs driven by defense industry demand. Conversely, agricultural tax rates are expected to decrease for 2027 by approximately 6.7 percent, following a lower average rye price reported by the Central Statistical Office.

Commodity markets show growing volatility. Analysts from PKO BP warn that Black Sea conflicts and declining EU grain production could drive wheat and corn prices up through 2027, with wheat purchase prices potentially increasing by 17% to 28% in late 2026. Meanwhile, the aquaculture sector remains under strain. Carp producers face lower production due to water shortages, energy costs, and cormorant losses. Wholesale prices have risen to an estimated 17–18 PLN per kilogram, up from 13–14 PLN last year. For the Christmas period, producers anticipate retail price increases of 10–20 percent. At Milicz Ponds, direct-to-producer prices have reached 28 PLN per kilogram.
