Polish agricultural seasonal management
Overview
Agricultural activities in Poland focus on managing seasonal transitions, weather-related risks, and optimizing yields. The starch potato harvest has commenced under challenging conditions following spring droughts and summer heatwaves. Ryszard Szaroleta, president of the Association of Potato Growers and Producers in Luboń, noted that yields vary by region due to precipitation; however, well-managed areas report yields of approximately 35-40 t/ha with starch content near 17.5%.
Soybean cultivation is expanding, with total acreage exceeding 100,000 hectares. In the Głubczyce region, soybean production has shown stability and profitability, with average yields around 3 t/ha and purchase prices reaching 2,020 PLN per tonne. While drought has caused yield decreases in some areas, soybeans benefit from lower pest pressure compared to rapeseed and receive area subsidies.
Sunflower harvests in Mazovia have concluded. On weaker soils, yields averaged approximately 2 t/ha, resulting in a net revenue of about 4,000 PLN per hectare after drying costs. The process was noted for requiring minimal fertilization and inexpensive technology.
Corn harvesting, occurring between September and November, currently focuses on managing moisture levels to reduce grain damage and industrial drying costs. Meanwhile, sugar beet cultivation, which runs from late August to early January, presents soil management challenges. The use of heavy machinery, including harvesters exceeding 60 tons, causes significant soil compaction, though the crop remains valued for improving soil quality for subsequent planting.
To combat climate stress, researchers at AGH University of Science and Technology are developing controlled-release fertilizers using sheep wool and biodegradable polymers to improve water retention.
