Renault Niagara pickup launch in Latin America
Overview
Renault has unveiled the production version of the Niagara, a compact 4x4 pickup designed for professionals and outdoor enthusiasts. As part of the ‘futuREady’ strategic plan to expand outside Europe, the vehicle will be manufactured at the Santa Isabel plant in Córdoba, Argentina.
Renault Argentina has committed an investment of $400 million to the project. While initial estimates suggested an annual production of approximately 65,000 units with 70% intended for export, recent details indicate a target of between 40,000 and 60,000 units annually, with a goal to export 50% of production to various Latin American countries.
The Niagara is positioned as a competitor to the Fiat Toro and will replace the Renault Oroch, with Oroch production in Brazil expected to conclude by October. The lineup includes four versions featuring a 1.3-liter turbo flex engine producing 160 cv (270 Nm of torque), compatible with both standard gasoline and E85 ethanol. Transmission options include a six-speed manual or a six-speed wet dual-clutch automatic, with both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations available.
Designed for versatility in light construction, agriculture, or recreation, the pickup offers a 938-liter bed capacity, a maximum payload of 654 kg, and a towing capacity of up to 710 kg. Pablo Sibilla, President and General Manager of Renault Argentina, stated that the project reflects the group’s ambition to launch 14 new models in international markets outside of Europe by 2030. In Brazil, the Niagara is scheduled to arrive at dealerships in November.
