Reserve and multinational exercises in Romania and Moldova

Overview

In late July 2026, Moldova’s National Army conducted a five‑day training exercise for approximately 100 reservists at the Bulboaca training centre. Following this, Romania hosted the largest annual NATO reserve officers congress in Bucharest from 2 to 8 August, involving over 500 reservists from 29 NATO and partner states.

By mid-August, military and emergency activities expanded. In Romania, approximately 1,300 Romanian and foreign soldiers participated in a NATO Battle Group exercise at the “Getica” National Joint Training Center in Cincu, utilizing over 300 combat vehicles, including Leclerc and Ariete main battle tanks, to test multinational coordination. Simultaneously, 144 firefighters from Romania and Moldova began joint training sessions under the C-TRAINED project to synchronize emergency interventions across the Prut River through July 2027.

In September 2026, Moldovan National Army soldiers joined the ‘Strong Griffin 2026’ multinational exercise in Lithuania, involving 2,500 personnel from eight states. Concurrently, the Romanian Air Force launched the ‘Burebista 26’ exercise, running from September 14 to 25. This complex, inter-army drill involves command-control and execution structures from the Air, Land, Naval, and Special Operations Forces. Participation includes aircraft from Spain and the United States, with allied assets stationed at the 57th Air Base at Mihail Kogălniceanu.

During this period, Military Unit 01794 Deva scheduled ammunition destruction activities at the Bârcea Mică special purpose range for September 16-17. Additionally, the National Army continued training exercises for Armed Forces reserves throughout September and October, with a session scheduled for September 21 to 25. This follows the previously announced ‘MOBEX Bucharest – Ilfov 26’ mobilization drill set for 5 to 12 October.
