Romanian public transport modernization
Overview
Municipalities in Romania are implementing large-scale public transport modernization projects focused on electrification and infrastructure upgrades. In Sebeș, the city hall signed a contract exceeding 18.5 million lei to procure seven electric buses and install ten charging stations (seven slow-charging and three rapid-charging units). This initiative, part of the ‘Development of Sustainable Urban Mobility in Sebeș Municipality’ project, will bring the city’s total electric fleet to 16 vehicles. These buses will feature Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and e-ticketing solutions. In Bucharest, modernization efforts include bids for a 648.56 million lei contract to modernize the Colentina and Titan tram depots, alongside €87.44 million in funding for 95 new vehicles. The Bucharest Transport Company (STB) has identified a low-investment method to charge electric buses via the existing tram and trolleybus network, though this is incompatible with the 100 recently acquired Granton electric buses. Due to unfinished rapid charging stations at depots, only 56 of these new buses can currently operate daily using slow charging. Caransebeș has expanded its electric fleet with one electric bus and two electric minibuses as part of an €8.8 million ‘Integrated Sustainable Urban Mobility System in Caransebeș’ project. Funded by ADR Vest, the initiative includes the construction of 23.53 km of bicycle lanes, 11 km of sidewalk rehabilitation, and the installation of two rapid charging stations. Mayor Felix Borcean stated these vehicles join four existing electric buses to serve the municipality and surrounding communes like Buchin, Turnu Ruieni, Bolvașnița, Slatina-Timiș, and Armeniș. In Brașov, a consortium led by Altimate, Prodata Mobility, and Wi-Novation has secured a contract worth approximately 26.29 million lei to modernize the RATBV public transport management system. Funded through the PNRR, the project aims to expand services to the Brașov metropolitan area, including Săcele, Râșnov, Vama Buzăului, and Teliu.
