Rush tribute to Neil Peart
Overview
In early August 2026, a feature traced Neil Peart’s drum-kit evolution—noting his progression from a $150 three-piece kit in the mid-1960s to custom DW models—and highlighted Rush’s signature songs, such as “Tom Sawyer”. Days later, the band performed Madison Square Garden shows featuring guest drummer Anika Nilles.
The tribute efforts include the documentary *Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple*, directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn. Following the release of the film’s trailer, the documentary officially premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 16 September. The film chronicles Peart’s journey from his youth in Hamilton to his status as a rock icon, exploring the artistry and philosophy behind his drumming and lyricism. The premiere was attended by Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Chad Smith.
The documentary features rare archival footage, interviews with Lee and Lifeson, and studio rehearsal sessions where prominent drummers Stewart Copeland, Chad Smith, Danny Carey, and Gavin Harrison participated in jam sessions playing classic Rush tracks to embody Peart’s spirit. The film focuses on his technical mastery of polyrhythms and his philosophical approach to music. In one scene, Lee and Lifeson toast to Peart’s memory with Macallan whisky, his preferred drink. The film is scheduled for a CBC premiere on 23 September as part of *The Passionate Eye* series.
Following Peart’s death in 2020, Lee and Lifeson initially stated they would not perform as Rush again; however, with the blessing of Peart’s family, the band has reunited for the ‘Fifty Something’ world tour. This tour, featuring drummer Anika Nilles, remains a central part of the coordinated 2026 effort to celebrate Peart’s legacy through media and live performance.
