Sinaloa heavy rains damage roads and infrastructure

Overview

Heavy rainfall across Sinaloa in late July and early August 2026 caused repeated infrastructure failures and required extensive emergency responses. On 23 July, municipal crews identified approximately sixteen critical points where pavement had collapsed along the Mexico-15 highway near Guasave and the approach to Sinaloa de Leyva. In Guaymas and San Carlos, storms toppled a tree onto a vehicle, damaged three electric transformers, and partially flooded a house.

On 27 July, a two-vehicle collision occurred on the Culiacán-Navolato highway. The following morning, torrential rain triggered a four-metre-long sinkhole on Avenida Federalismo in Culiacán after a stormwater collector failed, leading the Junta Municipal de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado de Culiacán (JAPAC) to close the road for repairs.

By 10 August, heavy rains and winds in Culiacán prompted the Municipal Civil Protection Coordination to address fallen trees and lighting poles. To prevent blockages, the Culiacán Cleaning and Sweeping Directorate cleared 44 storm drains and 229 catch basins.

By 31 August, Culiacán and other municipalities faced intermittent and intensifying rainfall. Light to moderate rains caused minor flooding and water accumulation in neighborhoods such as Campiña, El Barrio, Guadalupe Victoria, Villas del Real, Miguel Hidalgo, and Las Quintas. The State Civil Protection Institute issued warnings regarding potential moderate to heavy precipitation, electrical activity, and wind gusts reaching 60 kilometers per hour.

On 4 September, heavy rains washed debris into the intake system of the Juan de Dios Bátiz water treatment plant, causing high turbidity levels and a subsequent shutdown. Japac reported that water service is being restored gradually to more than 30 affected neighborhoods, though some high-altitude areas may continue to experience low pressure or a total lack of water.
