Slovakia impaired-driving enforcement and arrests

Overview

In early July 2026, Slovak police intensified checks on drivers suspected of substance use, particularly around large public events and summer tourism.

On 7 July, a 29-year-old in Košice was arrested after a night pursuit through the Sídlisko KVP district. The driver, who was operating a vehicle with altered Polish license plates, was already under a driving ban and tested positive for drugs. Shortly after, a 49-year-old taxi driver at Trenčín airport was stopped ahead of the Pohoda music festival; while testing negative for alcohol, rapid tests found methamphetamine, amphetamine, and THC.

On 11 July, enforcement included alcohol-related offenses. Tatiana Červeňová, the mayor of Malatiná, was detained after refusing a mandatory breath test following the Bačovské Dni festival. In Dražovciach, a 40-year-old driver who fled police collided with another vehicle, sending both into a drainage canal. The driver, who had a blood-alcohol level of 1.65 ‰, faces charges for endangering traffic under the influence of narcotics after a police officer was injured.

In August, enforcement continued during the Lovestream music festival in Bratislava. A 28-year-old taxi driver operating a Tesla was detained after colliding with a parked police motorcycle on Rybničná Street. While alcohol tests were negative, the driver failed two narcotic screenings; laboratory analysis later confirmed the presence of THC. Police also recovered a container of a dried green substance from the vehicle, and criminal proceedings have been initiated regarding the unlawful possession of narcotic and psychotropic substances.
