Terrion Arnold kidnapping case – free agency

Overview

On June 24, 2026, former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold turned himself in to Tampa police and was charged with eight felonies – four counts of kidnapping and four of armed robbery – stemming from a February 4 incident in Tampa. He was indicted on June 27 and initially denied bond. A Hillsborough County judge set a $1 million bond on June 29, imposing passport surrender, house confinement and no contact with co‑defendants. The Lions released Arnold the same day, absorbing roughly $8.4 million in dead‑cap charges.

Former Alabama coach Nick Saban submitted a character‑reference letter that the judge cited when setting bond. Shortly after, reports emerged that several NFL clubs – including the Houston Texans, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – had expressed interest in Arnold. Former NFL MVP Cam Newton publicly defended Arnold’s character while acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations.

Arnold was placed on waivers on July 5 and cleared them on July 6, becoming a free agent. A Hillsborough County judge denied prosecutors’ request for a GPS ankle monitor on July 9, allowing Arnold to travel for NFL workouts. The Texans conducted a private workout that day, and additional visits with other interested teams were scheduled.

Arnold’s agent expects a contract within the next month, though any signing could place him on the league’s Exempt List pending the criminal case. If convicted, the charges carry a potential life‑in‑prison sentence. As of early August, Arnold remains unsigned and under house confinement in Tallahassee while the legal proceedings continue.
