Trump Airport Rename Funding Dispute
Entities: American Airlines · West Palm Beach · JetBlue Airways · Delta Air Lines · Donald J. Trump International Airport
Overview
Florida’s House Bill 919, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, renamed Palm Beach International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport on 9 July 2026, changing the IATA code from PBI to DJT. The $5.5 million rebranding was partially state‑funded and licensed to the Trump Organization without royalty fees. The FAA updated the location identifier in July and the ICAO code is slated to become KDJT on 18 August 2026.
United Airlines clarified on 19 July that its policy does not permit free ticket or destination changes solely because of the airport’s new name or code, reaffirming an earlier correction of a mis‑interpreted internal memo.
American Airlines also notified passengers that the IATA code change to DJT will appear in reservation details but requires no flight changes. The airline supplied a script for agents to explain the update and assured travelers that itineraries remain unchanged.
A funding dispute has left the signage overhaul incomplete. The state contributed $2.75 million of the estimated cost, while Palm Beach County officials declined to fund the remaining $2.75 million, citing taxpayer burden. Digital displays now show the new name, but many physical terminal signs still read “Palm Beach International.”
Travelers have lodged complaints, organized boycotts, and shifted to nearby Fort Lauderdale (FLL) or Miami (MIA). Legal challenges continue, but airport operations remain normal, handling about 8.6 million passengers annually.
In related aviation policy news, Tampa International Airport announced participation in the TSA Gold+ program, a Trump‑administration initiative to privatize security screening, prompting emotional reactions from TSA staff and criticism from the AFL‑CIO‑affiliated union.
Supporters praise the tribute; critics point to conflict‑of‑interest, safety, trademark, and consumer‑rights concerns, framing the rename as the first U.S. airport named after a sitting president and sparking broader debate over politicising public infrastructure.
