Milan metropolitan transport disruptions
Overview
In early August 2026, Milan's metro Line M2 faced service suspensions between Centrale FS and Cadorna FN to allow for load-testing works at the Milano Porta Garibaldi station redevelopment. This followed an earlier electrical fault at Milano Centrale that caused significant delays. By mid-August, disruptions expanded to include broader railway infrastructure works and technical faults in the Milan metropolitan area. These included a 40-day track closure on the Albairate-Abbiategrasso section for maintenance and railway doubling, technical faults on the Milano-Mortara line, and the closure of the Milan Passante between Rogoredo and Villapizzone/Bovisa through August 30. These works resulted in the diversion or suspension of several suburban lines, such as S1, S2, S5, and S12, while lines S6 and S13 operated with limited service or replacement buses. On August 31, the Milan suburban railway Passante resumed full operations following the month-long maintenance period conducted by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). Service was restored on key lines including the S1, S5, and S13, reactivating major underground stations such as Milano Lancetti, Porta Garibaldi Sotterranea, Repubblica, Porta Venezia, Dateo, and Porta Vittoria. Consequently, extraordinary measures allowing Trenord tickets to be used on ATM urban transport have ended. However, service on the S6 line remains partially restricted due to construction for the new Milano Mind station. Until September 13, trains will only run between Novara and Rho, requiring passengers traveling toward central Milan to transfer at Rho. In early September, new disruptions emerged involving both industrial action and scheduled maintenance. A strike affecting local transit services is set to impact ATM operations, with commuters advised to use guaranteed service windows or alternative mobility options. Additionally, RFI has scheduled extraordinary maintenance in the Milan rail hub for September 12 and 13.
