Turkey wins 2026 Women's Volleyball European Championship

Overview

The 2026 CEV Women’s European Championship concluded in Istanbul with Turkey claiming the title. In a closely contested five-set final at the Sinan Erdem Sports Hall, Turkey defeated Italy 3-2 before a record crowd of 17,000 spectators.

Italy initially took control of the match, winning the first set 25-16 and the third set 25-12. Turkey responded by taking the second set 25-22 and the fourth set 25-21. In the decisive fifth set, Turkey secured the championship with a 15-10 victory. Head coach Daniele Santarelli credited the team's resilience, noting that tactical adjustments helped overcome the difficult third set. This victory marks Turkey’s second consecutive European title and secures their spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Individual honors included Melissa Vargas as the tournament’s MVP.

Following the victory, the Turkish national team, known as ‘Filenin Sultanları’, is set to receive state rewards under the ‘Regulation on Rewarding Those Who Demonstrate Superior Success in Sports Services and Activities’. Because the tournament occurs biennially, athletes are eligible for 75% of the maximum award, amounting to 112.5 Republic gold coins per player. At a valuation of approximately 44,500 TL per coin, each athlete will receive roughly 5,015,000 TL. Head coach Daniele Santarelli is eligible for 30 Republic gold coins, valued at approximately 1,343,000 TL. The scale of these rewards has prompted social media discussion, with some comparing the amounts to bonuses received by the Men's National Football Team.
