Turkish cities adopt water-saving and utility infrastructure
Overview
In late July 2026, Turkish municipalities reported a series of water-conservation and infrastructure projects. Ankara installed a 170-metre mist-cooling system on Kızılay Atatürk Boulevard to lower temperatures using minimal water. Diyarbakır completed a drought-tolerant landscaping scheme at the Selahattin Eyyubi and Fırat Boulevards intersection, utilizing geotextile mats and low-water plant species. In Antalya, Muratpaşa Municipality’s sensor-driven smart-irrigation system, upgraded in 2023, demonstrated significant resource savings. By July 2026, the system had saved over 5.6 billion liters of water and reduced electricity consumption by more than 2.3 million kWh.
By late August 2026, the focus expanded to include infrastructure renewal and social utility policies. In Tekirdağ, TESKİ began renewing drinking water piping in Hayrabolu’s İlyas neighborhood to prevent water loss and frequent breakdowns. Similarly, in Manisa, MASKİ initiated displacement work on a 2-kilometre main transmission line in Selendi to replace aging infrastructure. To further encourage conservation, Antalya’s ASAT implemented a tiered tariff system providing reduced rates for low-consumption residents and specific social groups.
In late August and early September 2026, Antalya Metropolitan Municipality extended its water efficiency efforts to the agricultural and urban landscape sectors. The municipality distributed 12,300 metres of irrigation pipes to rural neighborhoods in districts such as Alanya, Serik, Elmalı, Gündoğmuş, and Konyaaltı. Sertaç Gökhan, Head of the Agricultural Services Department, noted the goal to provide 100,000 metres of pipe support by 2026 to prevent ‘inefficient wild irrigation’. Additionally, in the Konyaaltı district, the municipality launched an irrigation project on Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard, utilizing Zoysia grass—a heat-resistant turf—and underground drip irrigation systems to minimize evaporation.
