Volvo expands Apple Music and CarPlay Spatial Audio

Overview

Volvo Cars continues to roll out a worldwide over‑the‑air update that embeds Apple Music directly into the infotainment systems of more than two million vehicles from the 2020 model year onward. The upgrade covers the full Volvo lineup—including EX60, EX90, ES90, EX40, EC40, XC90, XC60, XC40, S60, S90, V60, V90 and others—allowing drivers to stream Apple’s catalogue of over 100 million tracks without CarPlay or a smartphone.

Owners who activate the service through the Volvo Cars app by 6 July 2027 receive up to three months of free Apple Music access; returning subscribers are offered two months free. The new EX60 will be the first model to ship with Apple Music pre‑installed, and the update can be accessed via touch screen or voice commands.

Premium‑equipped electric models (EX60, EX90, ES90) with the optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system also gain Apple Music Spatial Audio powered by Dolby Atmos, delivering an immersive, concert‑hall‑like listening experience. Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars, noted that the spatial audio experience feels “as if you are at the centre of a concert hall or arena.”

In addition to the native Apple Music integration, Volvo has confirmed the rollout of CarPlay Spatial Audio, powered by Dolby Atmos, specifically for the EX90 flagship SUV. This feature also requires the optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system to provide a multi-dimensional audio experience for music and podcasts. This expansion follows broader developments in Apple CarPlay, including upcoming video functionality via AirPlay for compatible vehicles when not in motion.
