Vox municipal actions and councilor scandal in Spain
Entities: Fundación Mezquita de Sevilla · Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra · Vox · Seville City Council · People's Party (Spain)
Overview
In late June 2026 Vox intensified its municipal agenda across Spain, filing oversight proposals in El Puerto Global, Granada, Vélez‑Málaga and Palma, urging a hard‑line security plan in Barcelona, appealing Girona’s Devesa market ordinance, and becoming embroiled in a scandal when councilor Juan Manuel Badenas entered the Valencia student‑union headquarters. The party also demanded a review of the planned Islamic cultural centre in Seville’s Polígono Sur.
In July the Vox groups in Catalonia turned to local service issues. In L’Hospitalet de Llobregat they called for the urgent removal of invasive Ailanthus altissima trees after a windstorm caused hazardous branches, urging the city to devise a felling and replacement plan. In Sant Cugat they submitted a motion for a legal study on granting residents priority access to municipal swimming pools, arguing tax‑paying locals should receive preferential treatment.
On 23 July the PP‑led Seville City Council approved the construction licence for the Islamic cultural centre despite Vox’s opposition, with technical reports confirming zoning compliance. The council also reported repeated delays to awning works on the San Telmo footbridge.
On 27 July the council granted a €10 million licence for a 6,000 m² Islamic cultural centre in the Polígono Sur district, including a prayer hall for 500 worshippers, a minaret, cultural‑service spaces and a public medical centre. Vox condemned the decision, warned it would withdraw its support for the PP‑led administration and announced it will pursue legal action to block the project.
