West African educational and cultural reforms

Overview

Educational and professional development initiatives continue across West Africa, with a focus on teacher training and curriculum reform.

In Chad, the Francophone Initiative for Distance Learning for Teachers (IFADEM), supported by Swiss Cooperation, is conducting training for community teachers in the Mandoul region. This remains part of a national effort to train 9,200 community teachers using innovative pedagogical methods to improve student learning outcomes. Expanding on these efforts, an intensive 26-day training session recently concluded in Abéché for 2,000 education stakeholders. This program included 1,500 primary school teachers and 500 supervisory staff from the Academy of the East, covering classroom management, pedagogical planning, and literacy and mathematics techniques, including tools for bilingual classrooms.

In the Logone Occidental province, new initiatives have launched in Moundou to improve teaching standards. Approximately 60 early childhood educators from the Lac-Wey department began a refresher training program to harmonize pedagogical content and strengthen skills regarding child protection and supervision. This program utilizes a new pedagogical manual developed with support from UNICEF for the 2026-2027 school year. Additionally, the Logone Occidental Provincial Council launched a training session for 60 volunteer teachers at the École normale d’instituteurs bilingues (ENIB). Part of the National Volunteer Agency (ANVOL-T) initiative, this program focuses on classroom management and inclusive pedagogical methods to address challenges such as large class sizes.

Burkina Faso has expanded its pedagogical training for secondary school teachers in the Gourma, Gnagna, and Kompienga provinces. In Guinea, the Guinean Agency for the Promotion of Employment and Entrepreneurship (AGUIPE-E) launched a program in Boké, while the Centre d’études et de coopération internationale (CECI) conducted agro-food processing training in Forécariah. Other regional efforts include Benin’s infrastructure mobilization, Gabon’s teacher seminars, and Côte d'Ivoire’s gender equality workshops.
