Widow’s Bay television series production

Overview

The Apple TV+ horror-comedy series ‘Widow’s Bay’ has achieved significant critical and commercial success following its debut. The series, which stars Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis, earned 19 Emmy nominations and secured eight awards during the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards for categories including cinematography, sound, music, and production design. Betty Gilpin also won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Building on this momentum, series creator and showrunner Katie Dippold won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

Following the show’s successful premiere in April, Apple TV confirmed a second season renewal before the first season had even concluded. At the 78th Emmy Awards, the series, referred to as ‘La maldición de Widow's Bay’, made history by winning 14 awards in a single season, including Outstanding Comedy Series, setting a new record for a comedy. This achievement makes it the most awarded comedy series in Emmy history, surpassing the previous record held by ‘The Studio’. Major wins included Best Actor for Matthew Rhys and Best Supporting Actor honors for Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn. Additionally, Hiro Murai made history as the first director of Asian descent to win Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

This success contributed to Apple TV emerging as the leading platform at the ceremony, securing 29 awards and surpassing HBO/HBO Max. Following the awards, the platform reported its highest weekly viewership since launch, noting a 67% year-over-year increase for the week of September 14. ‘Widow’s Bay’ specifically experienced a 280% week-over-week viewership surge in the wake of its Emmy wins. This surge was part of a broader period of growth for the service, which also saw viewership jumps for ‘Pluribus’ and the film ‘Mayday’, alongside the expansion of Apple TV access through iCloud+ subscription packages in over 100 countries and territories.
