Wisconsin 2026 Dem primary – poll, ads, ballot
Entities: Tom Tiffany · Mandela Barnes · Tony Evers · Francesca Hong · David Crowley
Overview
Governor Tony Evers’ endorsement of former Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has intensified the August 11 Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor. After former Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez withdrew in late June, the field fell to five: State Rep. Francesca Hong, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, former state admin secretary Joel Brennan, Crowley and State Sen. Kelda Roys. Early in‑person absentee voting began on July 28 and more than 100,000 mail‑in ballots have been cast.
A televised debate that night featured all five candidates in a largely courteous tone; Barnes accused Crowley of being “resurrected by special interests.” The Democratic Party of Wisconsin has sued to allow absentee voters a new ballot if a candidate withdraws, a question a Dane County judge is set to rule on, while current Wisconsin Elections Commission guidance blocks such “do‑overs.”
A Marquette Law School poll released July 22 confirms Hong’s lead, showing her ahead of Barnes and Crowley, mirroring an earlier July 8‑16 poll that placed Hong at roughly 26‑27 % support. The Republican Governors Association has spent more than $2 million on attack ads portraying Hong as a “crazy” candidate, contrasting her with GOP nominee Rep. Tom Tiffany.
Hong’s platform includes defunding the police, creating a state‑owned bank and expanding health‑care and childcare programs, though she has softened earlier calls to abolish police. Barnes and Crowley continue to position themselves as the best chance to defeat Tiffany, while the ballot‑withdrawal lawsuit and absentee‑ballot rules remain unresolved as the primary approaches.
