World Archery Para Series 2026 in India
Overview
The World Archery Para Series 2026 was held at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, India, from September 5 to September 9. The championship featured 108 para-archers from 19 countries, including a 29-member Indian squad featuring athletes such as Harvinder Singh and Sheetal Devi.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the event via video conference, marking the first time this championship has been held in India. Shah emphasized India’s ambition to become a global sports hub, focusing on building a comprehensive ecosystem that includes sports engineering, equipment manufacturing, and medical science for sports injuries. He noted that the country aims to host major future events, such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games and potentially the 2036 Olympics.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi noted that this event is Ahmedabad’s fifth international sporting tournament in six months, reflecting the expansion of the state’s sports infrastructure. Sanghavi stated that Gujarat has allocated Rs 66 crore for sports in the 2026-27 financial year and is developing an advanced Para Sports Training Centre in Gandhinagar that will utilize artificial intelligence and sports science.
India concluded the tournament with a significant medal haul, securing a total of 15 medals: four golds, three silvers, and eight bronzes. World No. 1 Sheetal Devi led the contingent by winning gold in the women’s compound individual event following a shoot-off against Kazakhstan’s Aizada Seidan. Devi also set a new world record in the compound mixed team qualification with Rakesh Kumar, scoring 1,400 points, and earned a bronze in the mixed team event with Toman Kumar. In the recurve mixed team event, Harvinder Singh and Bhawna Choudhary claimed gold after a 6-0 victory over China. Other medalists included gold in the men’s compound and recurve teams, and individual bronzes for Bhawna, Sarita, Toman Kumar, and Swati Chaudhary.
